Observation of Pauli Crystals

The Pauli exclusion principle is a fundamental law underpinning the structure of matter. Due to their anti-symmetric wave function, no two fermions can occupy same quantum state. Here, we report on direct observation in continuous system up six particles ground state two-dimensional harmonic oscillator. To this end, sample full many-body wavefunction by applying single atom resolved imaging scheme momentum space. We find so-called crystals as manifestation higher order correlations. In contrast true crystalline phases, these unique high-order density correlations emerge even without any interactions present. Our work lays foundation for future studies strongly interacting systems many fermions.
